Munich Airport (MUC) Basics
Before you pick a hotel, you need a quick read on Munich Airport itself. MUC (officially Franz-Josef-Strauß Airport) sits in the Freising district roughly 28 km northeast of central Munich — far enough out that “hotels near Munich airport” and “hotels in central Munich” are genuinely different markets. The airport has two main passenger buildings: Terminal 1, used by most non-Lufthansa carriers, SkyTeam and Oneworld airlines; and Terminal 2, the Lufthansa hub used by Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and most Star Alliance partners. Between the terminals sits the MAC (Munich Airport Center), home to the Hilton Munich Airport, shops, restaurants and the S-Bahn station.
S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 connect the airport directly to central Munich. They run alternately every 10 minutes from around 4:00 to 1:00, take 40–45 minutes to reach Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz, and cost €13.50 one way (or €15.50 for the day ticket). A taxi to or from central Munich runs €60–€80 depending on traffic. Free inter-terminal shuttle buses link T1 and T2 every 10–20 minutes from early morning to late evening, with the journey taking five to seven minutes.
Once you know your terminal and flight time, the right airport hotel Munich choice becomes much simpler. International long-haul (US, Asia, Middle East) almost always means T2 and a 90-minute check-in buffer. Schengen short-hauls work from both terminals and need 60 minutes. Early morning flights before 7:00 are the strongest case for staying at hotels near Munich airport the night before, since the first S-Bahn from central Munich only reaches MUC at around 04:40.
Top 10 Hotels Near Munich Airport

Location: Terminalstraße Mitte 20, 85356 München-Flughafen · Distance: 0 km, 5-minute covered walkway · Rate: €220–€380

You can wheel a suitcase from arrivals to reception in under five minutes without going outside. The 551 rooms have heavy soundproofing, blackout curtains, plush beds, minibar and free WiFi; bigger families get suites and connecting rooms. The hotel runs day-use rooms specifically for layover travellers, plus a two-hour spa card to the Mountain Hub Spa, indoor pool, sauna and gym. Three restaurants — including the Andiamo trattoria — cover early breakfast and 24-hour room service. Best for: layovers, very early departures, business travellers who hate any unnecessary transfer.
2. Mövenpick Hotel München-Airport — Free Shuttle, Solid 4-Star
Location: Ludwigstr. 43, 85399 Hallbergmoos · Distance: ~5 km, 8-minute drive · Rate: €140–€230

Mövenpick’s Munich Airport property runs a free shuttle to T1 and T2 every 30 minutes between 4:00 and 23:30 (with a midday pause between 11:30 and 15:00 — important if you have a midday arrival). Notify reception of your transfer slot on check-in. The 244 rooms are spacious by airport-hotel standards, with quiet Hallbergmoos surroundings, gym, sauna, and the Hagen’s restaurant doing breakfast from 04:00 to suit early-flight guests. Lounge bar runs until midnight. Best for: business travellers wanting more space than the Hilton at lower cost, families before flights, anyone with a 4-hour or longer layover happy to leave the airport.

Premier Inn’s Airport East branch is brand-new, sits a five-minute drive from the airport on the eastern approach, and includes a hot breakfast buffet on most rate plans. 24-hour reception, on-site restaurant, free WiFi. The catch: shuttle is not free — it’s a paid service, or you can taxi (€20–€25). Parking is €11/night, the cheapest in the cluster. Best for: budget single-night stays, drivers who want cheap parking, travellers who don’t mind a short taxi to the terminal.
7. B&B Hotel München-Airport — Cheapest Free-Shuttle Option
Location: Lilienthalallee 39, 85399 Hallbergmoos · Distance: ~4 km, 5-minute drive · Rate: €70–€120

Breakfast is an add-on (€10–€12), parking is free, shuttle is paid (€7–€10 per person). 24-hour reception, self-check-in kiosks, free WiFi. No bells and whistles — but if you’re flying out at 06:00 and need a bed and a shower, it’s hard to beat. Best for: budget solo travellers, families willing to skip breakfast, anyone arriving very late and leaving early.
8. Mercure Hotel München Airport Aufkirchen
Location: Dorfstr. 15A, 85445 Aufkirchen · Distance: ~8 km, 10-minute drive · Rate: €110–€180

The location feels properly rural — church spires, fields, no terminal flightpath noise. Best for: travellers wanting calm before or after long-haul, drivers, anyone planning a Therme Erding stop.
9. Hotel Victory Therme Erding — Splurge With Spa
Location: Thermenallee 1A, 85435 Erding · Distance: ~15 km, 15–20-minute drive · Rate: €250–€450

Hotel Victory is designed as a luxury cruise ship and built directly into the Therme Erding spa complex — Europe’s largest thermal spa, with a wave pool, 28 slides, 35 saunas, palm-fringed tropical pools and the Galaxy water park. Guests step from the lobby straight into the waters in their bathrobe. 128 ship-themed rooms, multiple restaurants, balcony cabins available. It’s a 15-minute drive (or 25-minute taxi at €30–€40) to MUC. Best for: 24-hour layovers, families with kids, anyone wanting to decompress before a long-haul flight.
10. Best Western Hotel Erb — Steady Value Near Therme Erding
Location: Sandstr. 1, 85435 Erding · Distance: ~12 km, 10-minute drive (paid shuttle) · Rate: €110–€170
Best Western Hotel Erb (often listed as the Best Western Hotel München-Airport) sits in Erding town, 800 metres from Therme Erding and a 10-minute drive from MUC. 113 rooms, restaurant, gym, paid shuttle service. The location lets you wander into Erding’s Altstadt for a Bavarian beer-garden dinner the night before your flight — something none of the airport-cluster hotels can offer. Best for: travellers wanting a town walk and dinner rather than a roadside hotel before flying.
Airport Hotel Categories: Which Type Suits You?
Attached / Walk-to-Terminal
Only the Hilton Munich Airport sits inside the airport complex itself. Pay the €60–€100 premium over a shuttle hotel if your flight is before 07:00, your layover is 6 hours or less, you have mobility issues, or you’re rolling heavy bags with kids. The certainty of a five-minute covered walk to your gate is worth real money the morning of a 06:30 transatlantic departure.
Free-Shuttle Hotels (Hallbergmoos and Schwaig)
This is where most travellers should look. Mövenpick, NH, Holiday Inn and others sit four to eight kilometres from MUC, run free shuttles every 20–30 minutes, and price €60–€150 below the Hilton. Build in a 30-minute buffer for the shuttle and you’ll save real money. The trade-off: you can’t just nip back to your room if your flight is delayed by an hour.
Stay in Freising
Freising is the historic Bavarian town 8 km west of MUC, with its own old town, baroque cathedral and the world’s oldest continuously operating brewery (Weihenstephan, founded 1040). The Munich Airport Marriott sits here, as do several smaller business hotels. S-Bahn S1 connects Freising directly to the airport in 13 minutes. Stay here if you want an actual town walk and dinner rather than a hotel restaurant.
Stay at Erding (with Therme Erding Spa)
Erding sits 15 km from the airport and is best known for Therme Erding, the world’s largest thermal spa. Hotel Victory is inside the spa complex; Best Western Hotel Erb and Mercure Aufkirchen sit nearby. This category turns an airport stay into a wellness night — particularly compelling if you have an 18–24 hour layover and want to wash off a long-haul flight in geothermal water. Plan 25–30 minutes for the morning drive back to MUC.
Shuttle Logistics
Shuttle services for hotels near Munich airport vary more than you might expect. Most major-brand hotels run a free shuttle on a fixed schedule — Mövenpick and NH every 30 minutes, with shoulders into the early morning. Cheaper hotels (Premier Inn, B&B, Hampton by Hilton) charge for the shuttle, typically €6–€10 per vehicle or person one way. A handful (the Mercure Aufkirchen, some Erding properties) offer the shuttle only on request, with the same surcharge.
- Typical frequency: every 20–30 minutes at major free-shuttle hotels. Mövenpick has a midday pause between 11:30 and 15:00 — verify on booking.
- First shuttle: 03:33 at NH, 04:00 at Mövenpick — both early enough for 06:00 departures with proper buffer.
- Last shuttle: 23:30 at Mövenpick, 00:03 at NH. After that, take a taxi (€20–€30) for arrivals.
- Booking ahead: Mövenpick and NH guests book a slot at reception on check-in. Hilton runs porter service on request, no booking needed. Paid-shuttle hotels (Hampton, Premier Inn, B&B) book through the booking confirmation or by phone 24 hours ahead.
- Pick-up point at MUC: hotel shuttles stop at the central bus area between T1 and T2, signposted from arrivals — allow 10 minutes to walk there with luggage from T2.
Access to Central Munich From Airport Hotels
If your layover stretches long enough, central Munich becomes reachable from any of these hotels near Munich airport MUC. Most travellers underestimate the time — budget at least 90 minutes door-to-door each way.
- S-Bahn S1 and S8: the smartest option. Take your hotel shuttle to MUC, walk to the S-Bahn station in the MAC, board S1 or S8 (every 10 minutes alternating), and reach Hauptbahnhof in 41–46 minutes or Marienplatz in 38–49 minutes. €13.50 one way, €15.50 day ticket.
- Taxi to city centre: €60–€80 depending on traffic, 30–45 minutes. Worth it for groups of three or more, or arrivals at unsocial hours when the S-Bahn isn’t running.
- Lufthansa Express Bus: €13 one way, €19.50 return, every 20 minutes from 06:25 to 22:25, 45 minutes to Hauptbahnhof. Anyone can use it regardless of airline. Stops at Munich Hauptbahnhof on Arnulfstraße.
- Car rental: only worth it if you’ll explore Bavaria — central Munich parking is expensive and frustrating. All major rental desks sit in the MAC between terminals.
- Private transfer: €70–€110 prebooked, useful for early or late hours when S-Bahn doesn’t run, or when you arrive with a lot of bags.
Breakfast and Dining
Eating at hotels near Munich airport divides cleanly between properties that respect the airport timetable and those that don’t. The smart ones open breakfast at 04:00 or even 03:30 to feed early-flight guests; lesser ones stick to a 06:30 start that’s useless if your flight is at 06:00. Check the breakfast time before booking if you have an early departure.
- 04:00 breakfast guaranteed: Hilton Munich Airport, Mövenpick, NH München Airport, Holiday Inn Munich-Airport.
- 24-hour dining: Hilton Munich Airport has 24-hour room service. Andiamo trattoria runs until 23:00; Mountain Hub Bar runs late.
- Breakfast buffet typical cost: €25–€30 if not included; €10–€15 add-on at budget hotels (B&B, Premier Inn).
- Early-flight grab-and-go: most hotels offer a packed breakfast box if you’re departing before kitchen open — request it the night before at reception.
- Terminal alternative: if breakfast costs €25 at the hotel and you have time at the airport, T2’s airside cafés do a decent croissant and coffee for €8–€10 — sometimes the smarter call.
Layover Scenarios: How Long Do You Have?
4–6 Hour Layover
Don’t book a hotel. Use the airport Napcabs (small private sleeping pods inside the terminal, around €15/hour), the Lufthansa Senator Lounge if eligible, or a day-use room at the Hilton via the hotel’s hourly rate. Stay airside if you’re transiting Schengen-to-Schengen or non-Schengen-to-non-Schengen; otherwise re-clear security on return.
8 Hour Layover
Walk to the Hilton Munich Airport, book a day-use room (typically €110–€160 for 6 hours, 09:00–18:00), shower, sleep, work, use the spa. No transfer time wasted. Alternatively, an 8-hour layover gives you just enough time for a quick city visit, but it’s tight — allow 1.5 hours each way for transit plus 90 minutes back at the airport before your flight, leaving about 3.5 hours of actual Munich time.
12–24 Hour Layover
This is the sweet spot. With 24 hours, you have three serious options. One: stay at an airport hotel, sleep deeply, take the S-Bahn into central Munich the next morning for breakfast at the Viktualienmarkt and a walk through the Englischer Garten before flying out. Two: stay at Hotel Victory at Therme Erding and treat the layover as a spa retreat. Three: take the S-Bahn straight to a central Munich hotel near Marienplatz and treat the layover as a proper city visit — best if you have over 18 hours and confidence in your return timing.

Early-Flight Scenarios
The single best argument for hotels near Munich airport is the early departure. Munich’s first S-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof reaches MUC around 04:40 — fine for a 06:30 Schengen flight if you’re already at the station, useless for the 06:00 long-haul to New York. A taxi from central Munich at 03:30 costs €70–€90 and means a 03:00 wake-up. Compare that with sleeping at the Hilton until 05:00, walking to the gate, and being seated for breakfast on board.
- International long-haul (US, Asia, Middle East): allow 90 minutes between hotel walk-out and boarding. Budget extra at the Hilton if you’ve never used T2 long-haul check-in.
- Schengen short-haul (EU intra-region): allow 60 minutes if you have only hand luggage and online check-in; 75 minutes with a checked bag.
- Shuttle buffer: if you’re not at the Hilton, add 30 minutes to your timing — 15 for the shuttle ride and 15 for buffer in case it’s running late.
- Mobile boarding pass: drop your bag, save 5 minutes; download both Lufthansa and the airport app for live gate updates.
Late-Arrival Scenarios
If you’re landing after midnight, you basically have two choices: airport hotel or taxi to central Munich (€60–€80). All ten hotels listed here have 24-hour reception, so a late check-in is never refused — but the shuttle may not run. Confirm last shuttle times before booking.
- NH München Airport runs its shuttle until 00:03 — comfortable for arrivals up to about 23:00, after which you’ll need a taxi (€10–€15).
- Mövenpick’s last shuttle is 23:30. Late-night arrivals can taxi for the same modest fare.
- Hilton Munich Airport has no shuttle at all — and no need for one. You walk in 24 hours a day, even if you land at 02:00.
- Most hotels will hold your booking until 02:00 without a credit-card guarantee, but always notify reception of a very late arrival to be safe.
- Avoid eating at the hotel’s restaurant after midnight — most close kitchens by 22:30. Pack snacks or use airport food before leaving the terminal.
Family-Friendly Picks
- Hotel Victory Therme Erding — the standout family pick. The on-site water park, kids’ pool zones and 28 slides will burn off any pre-flight energy. Family rooms sleep up to four. €280–€450.
- Hilton Munich Airport — large family suites and connecting rooms, kids’ menus at Andiamo, indoor pool, no transfer to wrangle with strollers and car seats.
- Mövenpick München-Airport — children’s menus, two-bedded family rooms, indoor pool. Mövenpick’s chocolate-hour tradition (the brand gives free ice cream at 5pm on the 5th of every month) is a small win with kids.
- Holiday Inn Munich-Airport — Kids Stay & Eat Free policy applies on some plans; pool, gym, restaurant geared to family budgets.
Business Traveller Picks
- Hilton Munich Airport — Executive Lounge access on Hilton Honors Gold/Diamond status, business centre, attached to terminals, meeting rooms on premises. The Munich corporate default.
- Mövenpick München-Airport — quiet Hallbergmoos location, sound-insulated rooms, business lounge with day-rate access, free shuttle to T1/T2 every 30 minutes. Often €60–€80 cheaper than the Hilton on midweek nights.
- Hampton by Hilton Munich Airport South — Hilton Honors points, included breakfast, lower rate than the Hilton flagship. Best for cost-controlled business stays.
- NH München Airport — NH Rewards points, work desk in every room, extended shuttle window covers 95% of business flight times.
Budget Picks Under €130
- B&B Hotel München-Airport — from €70; budget winner. Functional, clean, free WiFi, paid shuttle.
- Premier Inn München Airport Ost — from €80; breakfast included, cheap parking (€11/night). Paid shuttle or 5-minute taxi.
- Hampton by Hilton Munich Airport South — from €120; free hot breakfast, Hilton Honors points, paid shuttle.
Parking at Hotels Near Munich Airport
Almost every airport hotel in the cluster has its own car park. Most charge €15–€25 per night — usually still cheaper than long-stay airport parking if you’ll be away for two or more nights and want to drive in. Some hotels run “park, sleep and fly” packages that bundle one night + 7–14 days of parking + shuttle for €120–€200 total. Worth comparing against the airport’s official long-stay car parks (Park P41 from around €11/day).
- Hilton Munich Airport: garage €34/night (premium for terminal-attached).
- Mövenpick: €15/night.
- NH München Airport: €18/night.
- Premier Inn: €11/night — cheapest.
- B&B Hotel: free.
- Mercure Aufkirchen: free.
- Hotel Victory Therme Erding: €18/night.
Pros and Cons: Walk-to-Terminal vs Free-Shuttle
| Pros | Cons | |
|---|---|---|
| Walk-to-terminal (Hilton) | Instant access to T1/T2; no transfer; no weather risk; day-use rooms; spa for layovers; 24-hour walk-in | €60–€100 nightly premium; only one option; busy public lobby; high parking cost |
| Free-shuttle hotels | Better price-to-comfort; bigger rooms; quieter; more dining options; rate often includes breakfast | 15–30 min total transfer time; shuttle schedule windows; slight delay risk; midday gaps at some hotels |
| Stay in Erding (spa) | Wellness experience; family-friendly water park; rural calm; real dinner option in town | Longer transfer (15–20 min); higher rates at Hotel Victory; not ideal for tight schedules |
| Stay in central Munich | Real city experience; many more hotels; sightseeing; restaurants; trains and trams | 40–60 min S-Bahn each way; €13.50 fare; no help if flight delayed; bigger margin for missed connection |

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking a “near airport” hotel that’s actually 20 km away. Many central-Munich and Garching hotels market themselves as “near MUC” because they have airport bus access. Read the actual distance — 20 km means 30 minutes by car or 45 minutes by transit. “Near” should mean within 10 km and 15 minutes’ drive.
- Ignoring the shuttle schedule. Mövenpick’s 11:30–15:00 pause has ambushed many travellers. Always confirm the exact shuttle window for your arrival or departure time.
- Assuming late check-in is free. Most hotels hold a booking until 02:00 only with credit-card guarantee. If you arrive after the official cut-off without notice, your room may be released.
- Paying €25 for breakfast when terminal cafés are €8. Sometimes the hotel buffet is genuinely worth it (Hilton, Mövenpick) — sometimes a quick croissant airside is the smarter call. Calculate the cost.
- Underestimating shuttle transit time. A 5-minute shuttle ride still needs 10 minutes wait + 5 minutes walk to your gate = 20 minutes door-to-door minimum.
- Booking the cheapest hotel when you have an 04:30 wake-up. €30 saved on the room costs €60 if you have to take a taxi because the shuttle isn’t running yet.
- Forgetting parking adds to the total. €25/night for parking at the Hilton across two nights equals €50 — enough to shift the value calculation against a cheaper hotel with free parking.
Hotels Near Munich Airport FAQs
Which hotel is closest to walk to Munich Airport?
The Hilton Munich Airport is the only hotel attached to MUC by indoor covered walkway. From the lobby to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 is a five-minute level walk on travelators — wheelchairs, strollers and suitcases all roll fine. Porter service is available on request. No other hotel is walkable to the terminals.
Which hotels near Munich Airport offer free shuttles?
Most major-brand 4-star hotels do: Mövenpick München-Airport, NH München Airport, Holiday Inn Munich-Airport and Munich Airport Marriott all run free shuttles to T1 and T2 every 20–30 minutes. Budget brands like B&B Hotel, Premier Inn and Hampton by Hilton charge for the transfer (€6–€10). Always reconfirm at booking — schedules change seasonally.
How do I take the S-Bahn from Munich Airport?
The S-Bahn station sits in the MAC plaza between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Buy a ticket at the machines (€13.50 single, or €15.50 day ticket which is often better value), validate it before boarding, and take S1 or S8 — they run alternately every 10 minutes from around 04:00 to 01:00. S8 is slightly faster to Marienplatz (38 min); S1 is faster to north-western Munich. Both serve Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz.
Best hotel near Munich Airport for a family layover?
Hotel Victory at Therme Erding if your layover is 18 hours or more — the water park alone justifies the trip. For shorter family stops, the Hilton Munich Airport wins on convenience: large family rooms, indoor pool, no transfer, kids’ menus. Mövenpick is a strong runner-up with kid-friendly dining and free shuttle.
My layover is too short for a hotel — what should I do?
For layovers under 6 hours, skip the hotel. Use the airport’s Napcabs (private sleeping pods inside the terminal, around €15/hour), a paid lounge day pass (€40–€60 with Priority Pass, food and showers included), or rent a Hilton day-use room from the airside connection without checking in. The Hilton spa offers a two-hour day card specifically for layover travellers.
Is it worth staying at the airport the night before an early flight?
Almost always, if your flight departs before 07:30 and you’d otherwise need to leave central Munich before 05:00. The cost of an airport hotel (€120–€220) is rarely more than the combined cost of a 03:30 taxi (€70–€90) plus the value of an extra 90 minutes of sleep. For flights at 09:00 or later, the S-Bahn from a central Munich hotel works fine.
Do hotels near Munich Airport include breakfast?
It varies. Hampton by Hilton and Premier Inn typically bundle breakfast into the rate. Hilton, Mövenpick, NH and Holiday Inn charge €25–€32 as an add-on. B&B Hotel charges €10–€12. Look for hotels that open breakfast at 04:00 if you have an early flight — Hilton, Mövenpick and NH all do.
Choosing Your Munich Airport Hotel

The right choice among hotels near Munich airport comes down to three questions. How early or late is your flight? If before 07:00 or after 23:00, lean toward Hilton or NH’s extended shuttle. How long is your layover? Under six hours, use lounges and Napcabs; over 18 hours, consider Hotel Victory or even a hotel in central Munich. How heavy is your travel party? Solo and light luggage tolerates a shuttle hotel comfortably; families with kids and bags should pay the premium for the walk-to-terminal Hilton.
